Mark McCall Is Called out of the Classroom

When a teacher gets really good at his or her craft, someone often suggests that administration should be the next career move. That's often the wrong choice. But it worked for Mark McCall, a middle school civics teacher turned director of a program that helps school administrators get and stay on top of their game.

"As I was growing as a professional, people were coming to me for guidance and support," said McCall, associate director of the BEST Professional Development project at Arizona State University in Phoenix and a 2011-12 PDK Emerging Leader.

McCall said he expected to be a classroom teacher forever. But a few years ago, after some of his students won statewide plaudits for their work, a district leader told him he was doing "good things" for his students and should get into school administration so he could do good things for even more kids.

As it turns out, McCall is as adept at coaching adults through their careers as he was at navigating children to a basic understanding of government. …
