It is with great sadness that we inform colleagues of the death of our friend and colleague Robert C. Melzi. Dr. Melzi, who has been an active member of the AATI for many decades, received a Laurea from the U of Padua and a PhD from the U of Pennsylvania. He was Professor Emeritus of Romance languages at Widener University. He had been on the Widener faculty for over 30 years and chaired the Romance Languages department in the 1970s. Before joining Widener U, Melzi was on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, St. Joseph's University, Villanova University, and Bryn Mawr College. Professor Melzi was an expert scholar of Dante as well as a philologist and a linguist. In 1966, he published Castelvetro's Annotations to the 'Inferno': A New Perspective in Sixteenth Century Criticism, while in 1973 he published the first edition of his Bantam New College Italian-English Dictionary, republished many times. This was one of the first Italian-English dictionaries which utilized US-English rather than British English as a reference point. …
