One of the biggest headaches for many elementary teachers in doing hands-on science is the collection of all the materials. Having everything available in one package including instructions and a presentation CD with the PowerPoint showing what to do is very helpful. Also in dealing with living things there is a concern over possible allergies and contamination. This kit seems to solve both those concerns.

Using the kit was very easy. The directions were clear and easy to follow. Students loved to see the seeds germinating. From a scientific standpoint, it might have been better to have some guided discussion on what was happening in the seeds and seedlings as they sprouted. Some additional slides as part of the presentation could have solved this concern.

A very big plus is the growing medium. It is an inert, sterile medium that is bacteria and insect free. Sometimes in the classroom having dirt can expose some students to molds and other organic toxins; not the case with this kit.

One caveat that should be considered is that in some native communities it would be forbidden to use beans in an elementary classroom. Certainly teachers in those communities could substitute seeds to be sensitive to local beliefs and practices. …
