In the introduction, the authors state that anxiety disorders occur when fears, which are responses to our sense of fight or flight, become excessive and unrealistic. For each anxiety disorder, the symptoms, causes, methods of diagnosis, treatment, and coping strategies are discussed, and case studies offer vivid examples of the physical, mental, and emotional effects; USA Today charts, graphs, inserts, and sidebars provide statistical data, results of studies, and additional information.

Individuals with these disorders may have higher blood pressure, less effective immune systems, and greater risk for depression and abuse of alcohol and drugs. Many cases appear to run in families. Common myths about anxiety disorders include, for example, the belief that most PTSD cases result from military action when, in fact, more cases are due to auto accidents. …
