The jury said, "... this is by far the most sophisticated building among the multiple residence hall projects ... the projecting balconies finish the gesture ... interiors and daylight are beautiful ... does a great job creating community ..."

Project Highlights

* The 226 apartments help the goal of housing half the student body on campus.

* The building emphasizes double-functioning spaces--every place is a collaborative space and contributes to the educational experience.

* It is a highly sculptural object and is a gateway building to the campus. It shapes space in three dimensions, and its elevations are patterned to reduce its scale.

* Two "L" shaped wings define two major public spaces: the west entry court terminates the academic mall and is defined by the nine-story wing and a grove of eucalyptus trees; the east court is a more private outdoor space, but open to all.

* The site plan is an important path between the campus to the north and the neighboring La Jolla community to the south.

* UCSD's integrated plan for developing renewable energy sources was evident: energy use is minimized and the building is naturally ventilated without air conditioning. …
