The year 2002 started off with a wonderful guest speaker by the name of Carol Jaques from Calgary. She spoke at our January meeting about the creation and demise of Unifarm, an Alberta based farm organization. She has written a book entitled Unifarm: A Story of Conflict and Change, which was published by University of Calgary Press. Ms. Jaques made this subject exciting and interesting to all who attended her presentation.

On February 26, the Society hosted their Annual Banquet at the old No. 1 Fire Hall (a Provincial Historic Site) with the guest speaker, former Fire Chief of the Lethbridge Fire Department, Tom Wickersham. Tom retired last September after 36 years of service. He is now an Alderman on Lethbridge City Council. His presentation, including slides, was based on the history of the old No. 1 Fire Hall and some of the fires fought by men of the station. Tom started his career as a fire fighter at No. 1 in 1965.

At the Annual Banquet, Dave Dowey, Treasurer of the Lethbridge Historical Society, was presented with the Alex Johnston Award of Merit (see photo). This award is given periodically to society members or past members who have given long and meritorious service. …
