An Emerging Research Leader: Jimmy Scherrer

It wouldn't be too glib if Jimmy Scherrer said he was moved to choose an education career by a different but real-life version of A Tale of Two Cities.

That came during successive high school summers working as a youth counselor when he got to know kids from Pittsburgh's tough Crafton Heights neighborhood and then spent the next summer as a youth counselor with kids from the more wealthy precincts of the Whitehall neighborhood.

"What a different type of experience these kids had," Scherrer recalled of the two groups. "I knew at that time that I wanted to work for inner city youth."

Scherrer, a 2011-12 PDK Emerging Leader, began his career by teaching 4th grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Now, a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, Scherrer is focused on how to enhance classroom learning by improving the traditional "inquiry-response-evaluate" discourse between teachers and students. In order to meet the demands of 21st-century jobs and economy, that model needs to be replaced by one that gives students more responsibility for learning, Scherrer said. …
