Many researchers have found that greater religiousness/spirituality is associated with lower likelihood of depression. In fact, over 160 articles have been published supporting this finding. While there seems to be a high interest in this topic, the authors suggest that it has rarely been studied in a way that allows for the data to be generalizable or representative of the entire population. Further, Toussaint et al. (2012) suggest that forgiveness may help to explain the relationship between religiousness and mental health. Many times in the literature, forgiveness is merely assessed as forgiveness of others, but there seems to be a gap in the literature regarding other aspects of forgiveness, such as feeling forgiven by God or seeking the forgiveness of others. Forgiveness has been linked to depression as well, therefore the authors hypothesize that forgiveness is a mediator between religiousness/spirituality and depression.

Participants were recruited using a telephone survey where 500 participants were contacted each month. Approximately 300 were new respondents each month and the other 200 were re-interviewed 6 months from the original survey. This sample was nationally representative. They used a measure of depression, forgiveness, religiousness/spirituality, and control variables (i.e., gender, age, race, marital status, education, and income).
