Dear Readers,

We are pleased to introduce the Fall 2012 issue of the Southeastern Geographer. For this issue, Brian Grabbatin has contributed a cover art photograph of a Sweetgrass basket maker's stand near Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Rooted in West African craft traditions and closely tied to Gullah-Geechee material identity, sweetgrass basket making has proven surprisingly resilient in the face of contemporary change in the Carolina low country. We turn next to our research articles. The first, written by Courtney Thompson, David Brommer and Kathleen Sherman-Morris, examines how pets influenced the decision making processes of hurricane evacuees in Louisiana during the 2008 Atlantic storm season. The next article, by Caiyun Zhang, Zhixiao Xie, Charles Roberts, Leonard Berry, and Ge Chen, assesses the potential for Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) for use as a regular salinity monitoring tool in Florida Bay. We turn next to an article by Shivangi Prasad who reports on an index that calculates the social and economic vulnerability of 184 counties in the northeast and mid-Atlantic seaboard of the United States. We continue with an analysis by Jonathan Leib and Gerald Webster of the heated debate over the Confederate Battle Emblem and the 2001 Mississippi State Flag Referendum. The last article, written by Jacob McKee and David Cochran, presents the results of a study examining the role of landscape in the distribution of deer-vehicle collisions in Mississippi. …
