One thing you should know about me is that I love the holiday season. The holiday season is full of traditions, family, food, and fun. In addition, it is a time of reflection--thinking about the past as well as planning for the future.

I've often thought that what we do as bankers is best represented by the holiday season. Throughout the year, we have helped people buy that first home; we have encouraged people to expand their business operations; and we have turned the first shovel of dirt at many groundbreakings. We have shared the joys and sorrows of our customers and our communities.

Our role as bankers is very simple: We make dreams come true. At Christmas time, it seems more special than ever.

For bankers, in many ways 2012 has been a difficult year. As an industry, we have been faced with great adversity with the further implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act; the introduction of new accounting requirements under Basel III; increased competition from credit unions in the area of business lending; the ever-increasing eagerness of the Farm Credit System to expand its footprint; and the burden of more red tape feeling much like a heavy winter snow.

In late October, several intrepid members of the ABA Community Bankers Council met in Washington. They not only gathered to discuss "banking" challenges, they met despite the challenge presented by Hurricane Sandy, which largely spared Washington, D.C., yet still shut down the city--and flights to and from it--for two days. …
