UNDERSTANDING READING PROBLEMS: Assessment and Introduction (8th ed.). Jean Wallace Gillet, Charles Temple, Codruta Temple, & Alan Crawford. Boston, MA: Pearson, 2012. 476 pp. Hardcover, $146.60. This book gives an incredibly thorough description of its goals and purposes in a combined opening letter from the four authors. I was impressed to find that the book stayed true to all that the authors promised. As past classroom teachers and literacy specialists, the authors were able to identify with all the parties addressing the struggles of young readers. The information they provide is relevant, clearly labeled and illustrated, and concisely worded to facilitate application.

One positive attribute of this text is its thorough explanation of all terms of reading instruction. Each chapter includes an explanation of the term being addressed, along with any historical or legal information pertaining to the topic. This information was provided for such topics as RTI, assessment, and differentiation.

In addition to a full background on each important topic, the authors provide many small asides that illustrate the issue at hand being addressed or taught in an actual classroom. …
