Writing a foreword to Volume 21, Number 1 of Literacy Learning: the Middle Tears has prompted me to reflect on the story of this ALEA journal. The first reason for this is that Nea Stewart-Dore, the guest editor of this special edition, edited the very first edition, Literacy Learning: Secondary Thoughts Volume 1, Number 1, in 1993.

In his foreword in 1993, Trevor Cairney, then President of the Australian Reading Association, expressed his hope that the new journal would become a major publication which will draw many secondary teachers to our organisations. His hope has certainly been fulfilled. Literacy Learning: the Middle Years is firmly established as one of the three journals published by ALEA three times each year, together with Practically Primary, and the Australian Journal of Language and Literacy.

This journal has remained focused on literacy learning in areas beyond English/Language Arts throughout the past twenty years.

The change in the journal title reflects changing perspectives on the significance of literacy in all curriculum areas, at all levels of schooling. From February 2000, the journal has been titled Literacy Learning: the Middle Years. This change was made in response to the increased focus on the middle years of schooling, from Years 5-9, emphasising continuity, rather than a separate primary and secondary school focus. The editorial of the first issue to bear the new title, Volume 8, Number 1, noted that the revised title, and the new cover design, highlighted its purposes and audiences. It is a journal about ways of improving literacy learning, and it is a journal for educators who are concerned to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the middle years of schooling. …
