Sex and Schools: By the Numbers

Article excerpt

Are teenagers sexually active?

Nearly half--46%--of all 15- to 19-year-olds in the United States have had sex at least once.

By age 15, only 13% of never-married teens have had sex. But, by the time they reach age 19, seven in 10 never-married teens have engaged in sexual intercourse.

The average age at which young people start having sex is 17, but they don't marry on average until their middle or late 20s.

A sexually active teen who does not use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year.

Most sexually experienced teens--74% of females and 82% of males--used contraceptives the first time they had sex.

In 2005, there were 712,620 pregnancies to American teens aged 15-19; 82% of teen pregnancies are unplanned, and they account for about one-fifth of all unintended pregnancies annually.

Do students report abuse?

When asked if they would complain to a school employee if sexually harassed by a teacher or other school employee, 71% said they would. But only 11.6% of students who reported being harassed had actually told a teacher about the incident; another 10.6% had told another employee.
