Our annual conference began at Victoria University in Wellington on Thursday, 3 November 2011, with sessions ranging from Internet piracy legislation to the problems of editing Bach (accompanied with practical examples) and back to a history of New Zealand music publishing.

On the second day we moved to the Wellington Cathedral of St. Paul for sessions about topics such as the future of orchestral music, film music in New Zealand, and the introduction of Freegal in public libraries.

A great deal of the discussion at the AGM on Friday morning concerned improving communication with our members. Several practical suggestions were proposed. It was also noted that attendance at the conference had been particularly high, up to 30 at some sessions, which was very gratifying but also caused some problems with seating. Consequently, a IAML NZ Facebook page was established (http://www .facebook.com/pages/IAML-New-Zealand /192374624176200) and has been both informative and fairly low-maintenance. The majority of the users, thus far, have not been IAML members, however. Perhaps it will end up serving a slightly different function as a promotional forum for the organisation.

The email newsletter that was sent to all members after the last executive meeting also proved successful, judging by the feedback received. …
