Images of a Loving God and Sense of Meaning in Life.

Sense of meaning and purpose in life has been linked to better psychological and physiological outcomes. Some individuals find their purpose through family, personal relationships, career, and activism. However, religion is a common source for individuals as well. Specifically, one's view of a loving God is of particular interest. The authors suggest that there are three mechanisms through which one's view of a loving God influences his or her sense of meaning in life: a secure attachment, religious coping strategies, and a positive self-image.

Participants were part of the Baylor Religion Survey, which was a national survey consisting of 1,648 adults. For the purposes of this study measures of sense of meaning and view of God were administered. They also controlled for religion and demographic variables. Measures of religion included church attendance, prayer frequency, and religious tradition. Demographic information included employment, marital status, education, age, and income. They used bivariate correlation and binary logistic regression analyses to calculate the best model to predict view of God. …
