Some Reflections on Together towards Life

1. The International Old-Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Union of Utrecht has studied the new WCC mission statement, Together towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes with great interest. Please find below some feedback given by our bishops during discussion of the document at their annual meeting, taking place in Konigswinter, Germany, from 3 to 10 March 2013.

2. Participants were the Archbishop of Utrecht, Dr. Joris Vercammen, the Bishops Dr. Ring (Germany), Dr. Schoon (Haarlem), Dr. Okoro (Austria), ThMgr Hejbal (Czech Republic), Dr Wysoczanski (Poland), and Dr Rein (Switzerland). Dr Mattijs Ploeger (Rector, Old-Catholic Seminary, Utrecht) also took part in this discussion. The Archbishop presided over the session and led the discussion.

3. The bishops have noted that for the second time only, a WCC statement on Mission and Evangelism was published. The bishops note and value the renewed understanding in the statement of mission in today's pluralistic world. The bishops readily affirm that God's mission is to renew the whole of Creation through the Holy Spirit, and that the Church is a gift of God to the world, sharing God's mission: bringing life to all. An emphasis on participation in the work of God through our common life in the church and our active solidarity in the world is welcomed.

4. The bishops asked themselves if there is some "triumphalist tendency" in the text. Most Old-Catholics would not emphasize the view that Christians have something on offer that all other people seem to lack, but rather our calling is to live a life that enriches and enlightens the world. …
