No matter how many years you teach, you never forget that first year. Each educator's experience is unique, but all teachers share some first-year experiences. These authors have captured some of those experiences and crafted a useful tool for new educators.

The 14 chapters in this volume cover topics such as classroom conditions, working with mentors, classroom management, and grading. Each chapter starts with a section called "The Story," which relates the authors' experiences, assuring the reader that even veteran teachers started off in less-than-perfect situations. "It's nice to know that someone else has had a similar struggle," the book states. Then comes "The Moral," or the takeaway from the story. Often coming next are "Steps for Success." Multiple strategies are presented, and, because a new teacher often can't recognize success, each chapter also offers a section titled "What Does Success Look Like?" This section reveals how common challenges can lead to positive results. Each chapter ends with a "Resources" section listing sources of additional help, such as standards documents, books, and articles, with each resource briefly reviewed. …
