Big Bank with a Small "Footprint": BNY Mellon Sees the Results of Its Energy Efficient Focus

Article excerpt

MEASURING THE EFFECTS of a business sustainability program can be difficult, but BNY Mellon has managed to put a number on one part of its efforts to reduce its energy "footprint." Savings of $17.8 million (January 2007-August 2013) is solely attributed to the bank's Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) program. PUE is a data center efficiency metric that equals total power usage of a data center divided by the power used to run the IT infrastructure. Efficiency improves as PUE decreases toward one, and the bank brought the average of its three data centers from 2.9 down to 1.63 in its best month.

Under PUE, BNY Mellon's data center managers shared best practices, spoke with equipment makers, and talked with their IT group about planned, future equipment purchases to come up with energy efficient upgrades. These varied according to data center, but included installing variable-speed drives on server fan systems and increasing the supply-air temperature to the servers from 72 to 78 degrees. These improvements are partly the result of an initiative to generate ideas from the bottom up that enhance sustainability at BNY Mellon's offices and data centers. "We charged everybody to come up with things that work in their properties and their buildings; things that might be unique to their circumstance," says Thaddeus S. Logan III, managing director, head of corporate facilities services, and cohead of sustainability.

These ideas are put through a cost-justification process before approval. "We want to ensure that the operating savings more than offset the depreciation," explains Logan. …
