A new release appearing on DOREMI, Ofra Harnoy and Friends (DHR-6609), provides a fine reminder of the career of a terrific Canadian cellist who was truly the best of her generation. It seems odd to refer to her in the past tense; though only in her late forties (born 1965) she has been retired from concertizing for some 15 years now, following an impressive international career and an extensive discography of distinguished best-selling recordings that well document her superb playing. She retired of necessity to personally care for a gravely ill mother, following which she withdrew to raise her family, never resuming her career.

Among her many excellent recordings, one standout is her definitive recorded traversal of almost all of the Vivaldi cello concertos recorded late-1980s through mid 1990s with the Toronto Chamber Orchestra conducted with fine baroque style by Paul Robinson (most recently released in 2011 together with the six Vivaldi cello sonatas in a 5 CD Sony Masters box set entitled "Ofra Harnoy Plays Vivaldi: The Complete Cello Concertos and Sonatas"). These are indispensible recordings for any lover of Vivaldi's music. These endlessly fascinating concertos are performed to perfection, providing a masterful lesson on how to play baroque music with passion and great expressivity while staying within the bounds of a well disciplined sense of baroque style. …
