Grounded author Bob Rosen asks leaders to look inward at who they are, what they care about, and how they are connected; these attributes are, Rosen believes, the foundation for effective leadership. Inner health, he argues, determines outward accomplishment. In Grounded, Rosen presents a structure for individual leadership health in six dimensions--physical, emotional, intellectual, social, vocational, and spiritual. The book explores each of these domains in six dedicated sections, with a total of 19 chapters exploring specific aspects of each domain.

Physical health is the source of the energy that allows us to lead. Rosen argues that leaders must maintain some level of athletic performance throughout their lives. Daily energy comes from good nutrition and restfulness, and that energy must be spent wisely to maximize your accomplishments.

Emotional health is a reflection of your ability to cope with stress, manage personal feelings and negative thinking, and generate a sense of belonging. Leaders need to cultivate positive emotions and thought patterns to reduce the stress that limits accomplishment. They must also maintain a network of supporters who will encourage positive thinking and nurture emotional health.

Intellectual health is characterized by an active curiosity about the world, flexible and adaptive thinking that evolves as situations change, and acceptance of the many paradoxes that emerge in life and business.

Social health comes from the ability to create, lead, and be part of strong teams, rewarding peer relationships, and productive collaborations; one of its hallmarks is inclusiveness, extending to those who have different opinions and perspectives. …
