This book is an informative and practical guide to vocabulary instruction written for both preservice and inservice teachers across the content areas. The first chapter focuses on the theory and research behind effective vocabulary instruction. The rest of the book (Chapters 2 through 10) is composed of practical strategies for teaching vocabulary.

Each chapter begins with a list of topic-specific strategies with their purposes, and then provides a detailed explanation of each strategy. For example, Chapter 2, "Learning Vocabulary From Context," includes activities, such as The Sentence Game, to teach students to infer word meanings. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on vocabulary instruction in strategic reading and literature, using methods such as graphic organizers and vocabulary logs.
