This volume compiles fourteen articles that originally appeared in the Journal of Big Bend Studies, published since 1989 by the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. Several of the articles are archaeological studies of this portion of West Texas and northern Mexico, but most focus on the region's history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Six essays focus on the 1870s through 1910s, the state's peak years of labor radicalism.
