Sub-Commission on ISBD and Music

Article excerpt

The sessions were held at the Institut fur Musikwissenschaft, the first one with an attendance of 10 people, the second of 4 people.

In 2012 the work of the Sub-commission was focused on sending a proposal to the Joint Steering Committee on the development of RDA, with the aim to establish a separate element for the music presentation statement, to distinguish it clearly from the edition statement. In November 2012, despite some favourable comments received, the proposal was rejected by the JSC, but the JSC suggested that IAML proposed establishing a subelement, if such a distinction was desired.

This proposal was discussed during the meetings of the Sub-commission, but the decision was not to make a new proposal.

Most of the time of both sessions was spent on discussion of the function of the subcommissions within IAML: such bodies are not clearly defined within the IAML statutes nor have they received precise terms of reference when they were established by the Council, even if their function is essential for the development of music librarianship and is a fundamental part of IAML's effectiveness and advocacy. Furthermore, the Sub-commission on ISBD and music has to deal not only with ISBD but also with cataloguing codes such as RDA, so that its name should be changed in order to make it more coherent with its real tasks. That should be considered also in the perspective of the future changes that are ongoing in the structure of IAML itself.

It was thus decided to send to the Cataloguing Commission the following document, asking to submit it to the Council as a recommendation to examine this issue:

Just like other similar structures within IAML, the Sub-commission on ISBD and music has been appointed by the Council as a permanent body, even if the role and terms of reference for such structures are not mentioned in the IAML constitution nor in the Rules of procedure.

The minutes of the 2010 Council meeting say:

12. Proposal for a Sub-Commission on ISBD and Music

Massimo Gentili-Tedeschi reported that IFLA is in the process of revising ISBD and, in his IAML liaison role, he has been asked to contribute. The formation of a IAML group to assist in this urgent work was proposed, and a Sub-Commission of the Cataloguing Commission was identified as the appropriate structure since, unlike UNIMARC, the work would be ongoing. …
