The urgency in retrieving and preserving manuscript and printed film music scores from often precarious conditions, together with the belief that more available sources and information would contribute to define a scientific methodology useful for a historical-critical analysis of the role of film music and for the speculations on soundtrack restoration, urged a group of music and cinema professors at the University of Turin to plan a research project entitled Cabiria, approved and funded by Regione Piemonte (the Piedmont local government) on November 2010. The goals of this project, involving a dozen of part-time researchers and post-doc fellowships coordinated by Annarita Colturato, were: a) carrying out a census of manuscript and printed film music scores preserved in Piedmont institutions; b) creating an online public access catalogue and providing digitized items, in compliance with current laws on copyright and droit d'auteur--; c) studying recovered materials and drawing up of critical essays on film music from different perspectives (musicological, aesthetical, ethnomusicological, bibliographical). …
