The Uninsured

Article excerpt

The early reactions of the uninsured to the Affordable Care Act are mixed, even though 74 percent of them say health care affordability for them and their families is a hardship. A majority of the uninsured in a December CBS News/New York Times poll and in a February Kaiser Family Foundation poll disapproves of the law, and 41 percent in the CBS News/New York Times poll say it goes too far. More of the uninsured say the law is likely to hurt them personally (37 percent) than help them (33 percent). In the CBS poll, 55 percent of the uninsured said that they had been uninsured for more than three years. The Kaiser Family Foundation's February poll release emphasizes that a "lack of awareness continues among the uninsured" when it comes to understanding the health care law. Indeed, six in ten of uninsured Americans between the ages of 18 and 64 report that they do not know when the deadline to sign up for health insurance occurs.
