Article excerpt

Can Only One Religion Be True? Paul Knitter and Harold Netland in Dialogue. Edited by Robert B. Stewart. Minneapolis, MN: Fortress Press, 2013. Pp. 215. $24.00, paper.

All of the essays written in accompaniment with the dialogue are older but recent enough to provide a coherent unity to this volume around this central theme.

This book is intended to give the reader a better understanding of the problem of pluralism and how to address it, while living in a globalized world where people are regularly exposed to cultures that may be very "foreign" to them (p. xv). The book's point is not necessarily to ascertain a definitive answer to this question but to open up a dialogue between people of differing opinions, in order to spark a conversation and take a proactive and academic approach to asking the question that has strong theological implications for people of faith everywhere.

If one ascertains this to be the main point of the book, then it is successful, in part, in giving a wide array of differing opinions and criteria for how to answer the question as to whether only one religion can be true. …
