In recent years, biblical scholarship has experienced a renewed focus on a theological approach which locates itself within the theological tradition rather than in opposition to it. As part of that conversation, Watson has composed a richly textured exploration of "the fourfold canonical gospel." This book is an appeal for a more comprehensive perspective on the Gospels, one that has room for taking the implications of the canon seriously. It is "an exercise in historically informed theological hermeneutics" (9).

Rather than treating differences between the four Gospels as potential barriers to the truth (as mistakenly done by Augustine and other Gospel harmonizers, Enlightenment critics, and "historical Jesus" questers), the plural embodiment of the canonical gospel rejects equating truth with a singular and univocal set of empirical "facts."
