Using Physics Gadgets & Gizmos, Grades 9--12 advocates "phenomenon-based learning" (PBL). PBL is a slight modification of inquiry-based, or discovery, learning. In this type of learning, students interact with a gadget or gizmo and make observations. They do an activity, typically in a group, and discuss, with the teacher's help, what phenomenon they are seeing. The idea is to extend learning beyond the particular experiment through play and discussion with peers.

The activities in the book are well-thought-out and illustrated and include background, suggested procedures, relevant vocabulary, safety considerations, and follow-up questions. The book also offers web resources and a "Relevant Standards" section linking the ideas to the Next Generation Science Standards. Kits can be purchased that include all the materials and gadgets needed for doing the activities in the book--but are pricey. …
