This latest volume from the National Research Council is exactly what its title says: a primer for working on developing appropriate assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

First, this book presents the arguments and evidence for how and why the types of assessments used with the NGSS at all levels of assessing--from classroom to statewide--will have to involve praxis elements that require a constructed response instead of more traditional content-driven questions. Second, it provides chapters on how to design these types of assessments and gives examples, both formative and summative, of what they would look like in the classroom.
