Antal Dorati and His Recorded Legacy. By Richard Chlupaty. Antal Dorati Centenary Society, U.K., 2013. 398pp. ISBN: 9780955246913

Antal Dorati and His Recorded Legacy is a terrific resource expertly compiled by Richard Chlupaty. This is Chlupaty's second contribution to the celebration of Dorati's life and career as a conductor and composer. His first text, Antal Dorati and the Joy of Music Making (2006) was a centenary tribute to his life and work and is focused mainly on Dorati as a composer, something that was not widely known. The reviews, comments and appraisals are very complimentary of Dorati's compositions, well respected in his time for excellent craftsmanship and musical integrity.

Dorati's recorded legacy is mindboggling. Chlupaty first presents an anthology of Dorati's recordings by composer (both commercial and broadcast, published and unpublished). This 263-page listing is impressive and very useful, with easy information access about every recorded composer during Dorati's life (1906-1988), especially the unbelievable number of performances of Hadyn, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky, as well as his work with 20th-century composers. The next section lists all of these recording chronological, starting in 1930 and ending 50 pages later in 1988. Equally impressive and useful, not only to the true audiophile but to all of us that appreciated many of his commercially available recordings (especially with Detroit and London) who now will know the monumental breath and prolific range that accompanies his reputation for tremendous quality and expert musicianship.

The remaining 48 pages were very interesting reading: reminiscences from 10 colleagues and scholars, each with terrific anecdotal recollections of Dorati and his recordings. …
