Followers of international discography may be familiar with Bill Dean-Myatt's Beltona: A Label Listing and History (2007), a numerical chronology of an important Anglo-Scots label that flourished from 1921 through the 1970s. In the interest of full disclosure I should note before going further that Bill is a friend and colleague, so the following is intended to be descriptive rather than evaluative.

A Scottish Vernacular Discography includes updated information on Beltona, along with other labels that produced Scots-specific material during the period. The earliest record is a surviving speech from 1888 by Lord Aberdeen, the Edinburgh-born Canadian Governor General. An 1889 American Edison cylinder ("Within a mile of Edinboro town" by trumpet soloist John Mittauer), is cited in the introduction but not found in the discography itself. Entries are organized by artist name and appear in chronological order. The 1960 cutoff date is informal, with later material included when it completes an individual discography. Records made in Canada and the US are omitted except when necessary to complete discographies of Harry Lauder, William McEwan and Sandy MacFarlane, Will Fyffe, and others who either recorded or had a major presence on both continents. …
