Mitchell, born in Texas in 1930, starts with the early life experiences that prepared him to become the sixth person to walk on the Moon. Mitchell's resourceful family viewed frugality as a virtue and nurtured positive relationships. He describes a childhood filled with riding horses, rounding up cattle, and fun family gatherings. He tells about his first solo flight. He describes some of the difficulties his family endured during the Great Depression.

In 1971, Apollo 14 crew members Mitchell, Alan Shepard, Jr., and Stuart Roosa walked on the Moon. Mitchell vividly details the mission launch, space flight, Moon landing, lunar experiments, and return to Earth. …
