Literacy Provides Common Ground for Standards

Literacy skills are crucial to learning science and have been a consistent focus oef Science Scope. Publishing articles about integrating literacy into science instruction has become even more important since the release of the Common Core State Standards for English language arts (CCSS ELA) in June 2010 and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in April 2013.

These documents share common goals for student literacy. The CCSS ELA lists 10 specific guidelines (Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects) for achieving literacy in science and technical subjects for students in grades 6-8. The NGSS contains a footer at the bottom of each standards page that has a section (Connections to the Common Core State Standards) that shows the alignment of specific performance expectations to connected or pre-requisite CCSS ELA. Appendix M of the NGSS is a chart presenting the science and engineering practices and corresponding portions of the CCSS ELA with an explanation of how the two sets of standards are connected. …
