After reading a number of "Best Books of 2014" lists, and noting that they were as usual more interesting for the books they omitted than the usual suspects they included, I decided it to be my duty as the editor of this small but respected critical journal to do a list of my own: appropriately itself small but quite respectable, including four of the best novels I've read in years, all of them brilliant, three of them by smaller presses, none of them on those suspect lists I inspected. They are, no two of them, at all like each other except that they are all written in masterly English prose, they are all funny but never silly, they all have an underlying sadness that is both honest and wise, and they are all the kind of page turners (even Robert Coover's 1,005 page wonder) that will cause a reader to stay up much later than usual, unable to keep from reading just one more chapter. …
