Texas Takes Wing: A Century of Flight in the Lone Star State. By Barbara Ganson. (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2014. Pp. [xviii], 294. $29.95, ISBN 978-0-292-75408-9.)

In 2010 Texas marked the centennial of flight in that state with a special exhibition, Tango Alpha Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration, at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. Barbara Ganson, an associate professor of history at Florida Atlantic University, worked with the museum staff to research and design the exhibit. Known primarily for her work in Latin American history, Ganson brought her personal interest in aviation--she is a licensed pilot and aircraft owner--to the project.

Texas Takes Wing: A Century of Flight in the Lone Star State takes both a chronological and a topical approach to the history of flight in Texas. While it is difficult to confine the history of American aviation to a single state, Texas--due to climate, geography, and sometimes the accident of birth--has witnessed many significant developments and has been home to individuals important in the history of both civilian and military aviation. Texas Takes Wing begins with a chapter on early pioneer aviators, focuses most of its attention on the period between World War I and the end of World War II, and concludes with explorations of the role of Texas and Texans in the postwar evolution of aviation into aerospace. The author has a broad view of the subject, covering civil, military, and general aviation.

This book is perhaps best dipped into at points of interest, rather than read from cover to cover. …
