Mission, Gender, and Power

Article excerpt

The theme of "mission, gender and power" for this issue offers a concentrated and critical focus on the search for gender justice as a mission imperative in our journey together toward life with justice and peace. Building on the "voices from the margins" in the Together towards Life mission statement, this issue of International Review of Mission examines the power relations between men and women that contribute to defining some missiological concerns, as women and men participate in "mission with" others within and outside their communities.

Acting to realize God's reign of justice, dignity, and peace, women and men have challenged gender injustice and sexism by sharing their love in action, not only through their lived spirituality, but also in their work on a number of issues and fronts:

* the provision of service in theological education as a missiological process of transformation;

* the search for gender justice as a mission imperative toward a just community of women and men;

* theological reflection and praxis in crossing over in the migration discourse;

* the search for an economy of life and economic justice;

* climate change and environmental justice;

* inter-religious learning and dialogue as a perspective in the agenda for evangelism;

* the story of women's role in the ecumenical movement;

* the role of men in responding to sexual and gender-based violence;

* the transformation of the culture of injustice and violence that contributes to increased risk of HIV infections;

* gender justice and peace through a pilgrimage of transformative masculinities for mutual partnership; and

* biblical reflection on turning God's images into commodities of sex and labour through human trafficking. …
