Noted historian Gordon M. Bakken died of cancer on Friday, 5 December 2014. He was 71 years old. During his career he authored or edited 24 books, as well as hundreds of articles. He was a prolific researcher and commentator on constitutional law and Western History. Professor Bakken was a strong and enthusiastic supporter of Phi Alpha Theta for many decades. He became the advisor for California State University, Fullerton's Theta-Pi chapter in 1982 and continued in this capacity until his passing. He also served as a Councilor, Vice-President, and, then, President of our organization. He was a key member of our Investment Committee, which helped us to establish an endowment that now totals over $1.3 million. Gordon also served faithfully on the Western History Association Dissertation Committee and as Chair of our Nash Journal Award Committee.

Indicative of his support of our honor society, Gordon established the Phi Alpha Theta Gordon Morris Bakken Scholarship in Western History. To honor him, another Phi Alpha Theta scholarship has been established in his name at California State University, Fullerton. …
