The Southern Jewish Historical Society announces that Adam D. Mendelsohn is the winner of its book award for his work, The Rag Race: How Jews Sewed Their Way To Success in America and The British Empire, published by New York University Press in 2015. The society awards this prize every four years to the book making the most significant contribution to the field of southern Jewish history.

The Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture and the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon announce a call for papers for a conference exploring regional and national histories of race and slavery in North America from the late fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The conference will be October 6-8, 2016, and will correspond with the opening of the first major exhibition interpreting slavery at George Washington's Mount Vernon.

This conference invites fresh examination of regional histories of race and slavery, both their historical significance as well as their contributions to the national history of American slavery. Proposals for individual papers or complete panels must be received electronically no later than December 15, 2015. …
