The Portage and District Heritage Advisory Committee has a few ongoing projects. Thanks to a grant from the Government of Manitoba we completed a heritage inventory of local business buildings. Thanks to the excellent research of Lome Thompson, we were able to create a shortlist of Portage la Prairie's most significant historic business buildings. Among these important properties were Hill's Drug Store, the Newman Block, Casseis Star Bakery, and Brown's Horse Palace. Interestingly, Hill's still operates as a pharmacy.

We are continuing our heritage plaque program into the north end of the city. These plaques, following community walking paths, provide heritage stories connected to areas within sight of walkers. We are also working on a photographic history of Portage la Prairie using an extensive collection of local photographs kept in institutional and private collections. It is our desire to have this work completed for Manitoba's 150th anniversary in 2020.

Speaking of photographs, the Portage Collegiate Institute Archive is adding photos to the Manitoba Historical Photographs database administrated by MHS Past-President Gordon Goldsborough. …
