This is a book about a young teenage girl called Phyllis Wong. She is a magician/conjuror who can also time travel. It is difficult to describe the wide range of skills and talents that she possesses.

The book is the sequel to Phyllis Wong and the forgotten secrets of Mr Okyto. At the beginning of this novel, it is unclear who some of the characters are. They would have been introduced in the first book and, with this book being the second, the author assumes the reader would already know these characters. However, after the first couple of chapters, it becomes fairly obvious who the characters are.

The story is centred around the mysterious appearances of First Folios, which are original collections of William Shakespeare's plays. It gets very suspicious when Folios keep appearing after centuries of them being few in number. They also appear to be in very good condition even though they are meant to be from the 16th century. So, Phyllis joins the Chief Inspector who is already on the case. They attend an auction where a Folio is up for sale and progress from there. This plot is intertwined with the mysterious reappearance of Phyllis' great-grandfather who was thought to have disappeared many years before, during a trick in a magic show.

Phyllis' great-grandfather comes to see her and teaches her how to time travel. …
