This book is designed for middle level science educators who are in need of lessons for teaching about the Sun, Moon, and their cycles and eclipses.

There are four chapters in the book. Each one deals with the Next Generation Science Standards disciplinary core ideas and focuses on the Sun, solar activity, and space weather. Also included in the book are connections to the Common Core math and literacy standards.

In the introduction, the authors discuss how to use an Astronomy Lab Notebook, Think-Pair Share learning strategy, the 5-E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) Instructional Model as a learning cycle, and how to personalize the book for a class. The four chapters cover such topics as tracking and understanding the daily and annual motion of the Sun and understanding space weather, seasons, and solar activity. Each chapter includes learning goals, recommended teaching timeline, and an overview of student experiences using the 5-E Instructional Model and connecting with the standards. Safety notes and concerns are included with each lesson.

Through one lesson in the book, students actually track shadow length and the Sun in two separate activities. …
