Man on a Mission is a video that documents the space adventure of Richard Garriott, whose unusual life circumstances presented a rare opportunity.

Richard's father, Owen, was a NASA astronaut. Owen's videos from the Skylab space station demonstrated physics principles in a microgravity environment. Richard, who narrates the program, aspired to follow his father's path, but NASA's training program rejected him due to a vision defect.

A compulsive techie and tinkerer as a young man, Richard was an early developer of computer games, eventually coming into great wealth as the inventor of roleplaying games that sold millions of copies. After undergoing surgery to correct his vision problems, Richard set about to find a way into space. Finally he was able to buy, for 30 million dollars, a place aboard the International Space Station (ISS) through the Russian space agency.

We join Richard as he undergoes training at Star City in Russia, and this segment of the documentary provides a history of Russian accomplishments in space exploration. Students will benefit from learning about the contributions of Soviet scientists and astronauts who took humanity's first steps toward space. …
