Accounting in the International Age: Future-Focused and More Relevant Than Ever

As an executive at a leading container shipping company, I have a unique perspective on international business and the challenges and opportunities accounting professionals face in an ever more connected world. The world is shrinking, but we see complexity growing from regulation, currency fluctuations and the clash of economic policies.

For these reasons, there's never been greater demand for talent in finance functions, and management accountants are increasingly called upon to fill that role on the international stage. Supplying and nurturing that talent was a key driver for the joint venture between the AICPA and The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the resulting launch of the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. We've built on that success with the creation of the CGMA competency framework, the AICPA-CIMA Competency and Learning website--which benefits CPAs and CGMAs alike--and a wealth of other professional resources to support the designation.

Now it's time for the joint venture to evolve to the next level. The AICPA is asking members to vote on an important member ballot to create a new association with CIMA that, while preserving the member bodies of both organizations, would integrate international strategies, management and operations to help advance the profession, both in public and management accounting.

The AICPA's Business and Industry Executive Committee, which I chair, supports this approach, as do the AICPA's Board of Directors, governing Council and 52 state (and U.S. territory) societies. And so should you.

The proposal would create a truly international organization of accounting professionals dedicated to strengthening the profession and transforming it into a future-focused network of the world's most trusted business advisors. AICPA members will have access to enhanced resources and networking opportunities they need to be leaders within their organizations--and to help their clients and employers ride the waves of change as well. …
