In the original publication of the above article, the example provided on page 407 to calculate Tau-U by hand, adjusting for trend in baseline and intervention, contains errors.

[T]he ratio for Phase A (1/9 or 0.11) is calculated for positive trend in Phase A (meaning the baseline data is going in the direction opposite of the desired treatment). The same process is used for determining trend in Phase B (seven intervention data points multiplied by seven intervention data points equals 49 possible pairwise comparisons). The number of positives minus the number of negatives is 8-9 or -1 (see symbols in matrix). The ratio is then -1/49 pairs or -.02. In this example, the trend is in the opposite direction for the treatment effect and will adjust the ES down. These are both negligible trends and probably do not need correction. …
