Educators Rising Develops Standards to Guide Preparation of Future Teachers

Article excerpt

Educators Rising, an evolution of the Future Educators Association[R], is developing standards to backmap professional teaching standards--what teachers need to know and be able to do--into an earlier, precollegiate stage of teacher recruitment and development. Educators Rising is part of the PDK International Family of Associations.

This work is made possible by a $250,000 grant from the National Education Association.

The committee developing the standards includes 12 education professionals who represent a crosssection of educators from around the country. Its work will be guided by the standards development process and protocols set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The standards will form the bedrock for curriculum and micro-credentials--competency-based recognitions--for grow-your-own teacher pipeline programs in high schools across the country.

The standards committee includes eight National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) and two teachers who have been Teacher of the Year for their states:

* Doretha Allen, NBCT, Texas; K-12 literacy academic facilitator

* Melissa Collins, NBCT, Tennessee; elementary school teacher and America Achieves lead fellow

* Jaime Festa-Daigle, NBCT, Arizona; high school teacher and school-based administrator

* Roberta Goff, West Virginia; high school teacher

* Francisca Jensen, NBCT, Oklahoma; early childhood education teacher

* Dat Le, NBCT, Virginia; science supervisor

* Leah Lechleiter-Luke, Wisconsin; high school teacher

* Meg Manugo, NBCT, Virginia; English and career and technical education teacher

* Lynne Olmos, NBCT, Washington; middle and high school teacher

* Selina Riley-Gurganus, NBCT, North Carolina; school administrator

* Lee-Ann Stephens, Minnesota; racial equity coach

* Daniel Weidner, Illinois; district administrator

"This is groundbreaking work for a strong front end of the teaching pipeline," said Educators Rising CoDirector Dan Brown, a National Board Certified Teacher. …
