Hosted SIDS Pua Kumbu Competition and Workshop (24 October 2015)

This workshop was held at The Tun Jugah Foundation, Level 4, Tun Jugah. It was a joint program with SIDS (Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak). The Pua Kumbu competition was organized by SIDS Sibu Branch and was held in Sibu. All entries were executed in natural dyes and using cotton only and in two categories: pua kumbu (warp-patterned ceremonial blanket made using the tie-dye technique) and kain kebat (tie-dye woven skirt). The objectives of the competition are to promote Dayak handicraft, to encourage Dayak women to weave, and to promote pua kumbu as a cottage industry for Dayak women. Most of the entries came from weavers in Kapit. The pua kumbu entries were also judged in Sibu but the winning pieces were brought to the workshop in Kuching for exhibition at The Tun Jugah Foundation. More than eighty participants from various SIDS branches in Sarawak attended the workshop. The objectives of the workshop is to serve as a platform to gather all the best pua kumbu weavers to teach their skills to the SIDS members as well as well as creating awareness on the process and rituals of the weaving techniques. …
