In January of 2013, AFB Press, the publisher of the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB), partnered with the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) so that a subscription to JVIB would be provided without cost as a benefit to all members of AER. Having recently attended the AER international conference, I was reminded of how very important this relationship is for professionals who wish to stay current on changes in the field of visual impairment. These forms of professional development--attending conferences and reading journals--offer complementary methods to connect with the researchers and practitioners who are helping us to quench our thirst for new knowledge. I cannot imagine relying solely on either method to keep up with new information, however, since what I learn through each avenue is reinforced by the other.

For example, there were several presentations I attended at the conference that included the results of research I had previously read about in JVIB. My understanding of the research findings was elucidated through being able to ask questions of presenters and through conversations with colleagues. Similarly, I left the conference eager to see the results described at other sessions reported in JVIB. Publication in a peer-reviewed journal such as this one gives us all a chance to review the methodologies and findings more carefully and to further reflect on how we can use this information in our practice.

A problem with only relying on conference attendance for one's professional development is that there are way too many interesting sessions offered at one time, making it impossible to be at every session. …
