Publisher: Australia, 2015 is an App well worth looking at if you wish to connect your students' literacy learning with their digital world. Found in both the Apple Store and Google Play Store, this app is free, although you can also make inexpensive in-app purchases of additional modules, such as Grammar and Tips, Encyclopaedia, Example Sentences or Idioms and Phrases. This Dictionary app is not only free but works off-line and contains over two million entries.

How might this be useful in a classroom?

There is Word of the Day. Maybe you'd like to establish a quick and regular lesson segment that will help to build vocabulary. The app performs audio pronunciation, in case the student (or the teacher?) is not quite sure how to sound out a word. The app shows syllable breakdown, including which syllable to emphasise. Quizzes are available, which might be a very motivational way to challenge students.

The Thesaurus feature is a great way for students to work on making their word choice more sophisticated, while the teacher works with other students. Another very pleasing feature is Origin. This is a fantastic way for students to make connections with other words. …
