The IRI Medal

Article excerpt

Recognizing the significant achievements of individual innovators is a core mission of the Industrial Research Institute (IRI). The IRI Medal, established in 1946, is presented to recognize leaders of technology for outstanding accomplishments in technological innovation that have contributed broadly to the development of industry and the advancement of science and society. The Medal is awarded at the discretion of IRI's Board of Directors and presented at IRI's Annual Meeting. In 2016, the Board awarded the IRI Medal to two distinguished innovation leaders: Peter H. Diamandis and Vinton G. Cerf.

Peter H. Diamandis

The 2016 IRI Medal was presented to Peter H. Diamandis, Vice Chairman and Cofounder of Human Longevity, Inc., and Founder and Executive Chairman of XPRIZE Foundation, in recognition of his revolutionary efforts to expand the field of innovation and technology development; his pioneering use of incentive-based competitions to commercialize space and to advance human health; his leadership in the study and application of transformative technologies; and his willingness to take on humanity's greatest challenges.

As Founder and Executive Chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, Diamandis oversees an organization that leads the world in designing and operating large-scale innovation competitions. At Human Longevity, Inc, he drives research to use data-based tools to extend the healthy human life span. He is also cofounder and Executive Chairman of Singularity University, a graduate-level Silicon Valley institution that studies exponentially growing technologies and their ability to transform industries and address humanity's grand challenges. He has also looked to space--he is cofounder and co-chairman of Planetary Resources, a company that designs spacecraft to enable the detection and prospecting of asteroids for fuels and precious materials, and a cofounder of Space Adventures and Zero Gravity Corporation.

Diamandis has authored two New York Times bestsellers, Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think and BOLD: How to Go Big, Create Wealth, and Impact the World. He was recently named among Fortune Magazine's World's 50 Greatest Leaders.
