The International Study Guides series by Fortress Press has been helpful in bringing together a vast collection of emerging and established scholarship that has hitherto been rather spread out in the publishing world. It is also an acknowledgement of the shifting landscapes of theology in the global context.

Bringing together the most prominent Asian theologians in one work is an extraordinary achievement in itself. The edited work of Peniel Rajkumar, with its intentionally metaphorical outline, authentically represents the distinct and engaging theological voices of the Asian context. In Rajkumar's own words, what the book seeks to do is to examine "how Asian Christians have discerned God's presence and decried God's seeming absence in their own (histories, of how they have related God and represented Jesus Christ to their neighbours of different faiths and of how they have sought to foster avenues for peace and forge visions of justice as part of their faith-commitment to follow Christ" (p. xiv). This book is an excellent manual for both students and educators, as it represents the main concerns of doing theology in the Asian context.

What is really student-friendly is the book's layout, with its clear index and highlighted sections. What makes this book accessible is that the editor has been successful in maintaining a particular writing style that deliberately avoids the dense theological expressions that one may encounter in books dealing with similar issues. Those who find the exercise of reading books on theology daunting would be pleased by the sheer accessibility of the thoughts expressed in the book. …
